The Orsett Cock dates back to 1829, and the first known landlord is listed as Dan Partridge. The original building was a "plaster fronted inn" and built on the boundaries of Cock Farm. The Orsett Cock is believed to have taken its name from the fierce bantam called Ethelred the 3rd who resided on the farm.

During the war there was an army base behind the pub and many of the soldiers stationed there used to frequent the pub for refreshment.

The pub itself is reputed to be haunted by "Lizzie" believed to be Eliza Pettit, a landlady from before and during the Second World War. Present and past occupants of the pub have reported strange happenings, and Lizzie is said to make her presence known most when there is unrest in the pub.

The pub remains a landmark in the area and still offers the best of British facilities, with a warm and friendly atmosphere for all ages to enjoy.
